Best Parks in Paris

In the radiant City of Lights, Paris, a network of lush, verdant parks provides an escape from the urban humdrum. Each one is a leafy portal to the past, sprinkled with architectural delights, royal intrigue, and even a touch of the wild side. While there are so many parks and green spaces in Paris, we’ve shortlisted the best parks in Paris worth exploring.

BOIS DE BOULOGNE

Starting with the Bois de Boulogne, a whopping 850-hectare haven of nature,  was formerly a royal hunting ground that underwent a green makeover in the mid-19th century by Baron Haussmann who was tasked by Emperor Napoleon III to create a park that would rival London’s Hyde Park.  While they kept some it it wild, there are many grassy plains and leisure areas throughout this massive park. Today, it’s a paradise for runners, cyclists and anyone seeking a green escape. You can, for instance, rent a row boat and explore the lake,  enjoy lunch at a restaurant chalet situated on an island in the lake, or even visit the famous Longchamp Hippodrome where famous horse races are held. For kids, there’s a mini amusement park called La Jardin d’Acclimatation and one of the newest editions is the Louis Vuitton Foundation museum. This park is so big there are even numerous gardens within the park, such as the Parc Bagatelle, famous for its formal French garden and roses, and Shakespear garden.  No matter what brings you here, a big thanks to Napoleon III’s green thumb is in order.

BOIS DE VINCENNES

On the city’s east, Bois de Vincennes, is even BIGGER than Bois de Boulognes with 995 hectares! This park owes its existence to the same Haussmann-Napoleon III duo and consists of all kinds of interesting things such as the world famous Parc Floral, a garden full of flowers, water gardens, and even mini Asian gardens. it even has two of Paris’s best kept secrets: the official Paris Zoo (Parc Zoologique) and the Chateau de Vincennes, a medieval fortress that should be on everyone’s list to visit.  The zoo itself is massive and is one of the best zoos in the world with literally every type of animal you can imagine.

PARC MONCEAU

Meanwhile a much smaller park called Parc Monceau is located in within the city’s very core. Conceived by Louis Carrogis Carmontelle in the 18th century, this small yet beautiful park boasts all kinds of architectural follies that make for a delightful visual world tour. There is a big playground for kids, poney rides which have been in operation since the 19th century, a food stand, and ample grassy hills to enjoy.  The most interesting thing about this park is that it was where the world’s first recorded automobile race took place in 1887. Jog around its paths, and you’re literally tracing the tyre marks of history!

PARC DES BUTTES-CHAUMONT

Located in the northeast of Paris, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is an extraordinary retreat that transports you into a realm of the imagination.  Conceived and brought to life for the 1867 Universal Exhibition by the ingenious Jean-Charles Alphand, who also transformed Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes, this park has intriguing topography – it’s not only hilly but features the iconic Temple de la Sibylle perched on a cliff and overlooking a serene lake. This mesmerising vista is accessible via a 63-metre-long suspension bridge, an architectural marvel designed by Gustave Eiffel (you, know the tower guy). But the park’s allure extends beyond the temple. It boasts man-made grottoes replete with waterfalls, gardens teeming with diverse flora, and an array of activities, such as two Guignol theatres, harking back to traditional French puppetry. This fairytale park is great for lakeside picnics and views of Paris.

And just next door his the natural history museum, making this park a top choice for families seeking to enjoy a fun and educational day out.
